Ecuador Prepares for World Cup Challenge with Match Against Morocco
Ecuador is set to clash with Morocco this Friday, March 27, in an international friendly taking place in Madrid as part of the FIFA date. This match serves as crucial preparation for the Ecuadorian national team, especially considering their upcoming encounter with Ivory Coast in the 2026 World Cup. With this context in mind, the friendly against the Moroccan squad will mark only the eleventh time in history that La Tri competes against African teams, and notably, it will be their first-ever match against Morocco.
Historically, Ecuador has had a balanced record against African opponents, tallying four victories, four losses, and two draws. Their initial encounter with an African team occurred during a friendly in South Korea, known as the Korea Cup, where they achieved a resounding 4-0 victory over Zambia on June 4, 1995. Leading up to the 2002 World Cup, although Ecuador was not scheduled to face any African teams, they played two friendlies against teams from the continent. In their debut World Cup in Korea-Japan 2002, they found themselves grouped with Italy, Mexico, and Croatia.
In the lead-up to the World Cup, Ecuador faced South Africa in Murcia, resulting in a goalless draw, while during their stay in Tottori, Japan, they suffered a narrow defeat against Senegal. The Senegalese national team has proven to be a challenging opponent for La Tri, as they have faced them three times, all ending in defeats. The most significant encounter was during the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where Senegal triumphed 2-1 over Ecuador, eliminating them in the group stage.
Before the World Cup match, Ecuador's last friendly took place in 2022 against Cape Verde, where they secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from Jordy Caicedo, a striker who has recently rejoined the team under the management of Sebastián Beccacece.
