Ecuador's Leonardo Campana Withdraws from Upcoming Friendlies Due to Injury

Leonardo Campana's Injury Strikes Ecuador's World Cup Preparations

In a significant setback for Ecuador's national football team, forward Leonardo Campana has been ruled out of the upcoming friendly matches against Morocco and the Netherlands as he recovers from a hamstring injury sustained during his last appearance with the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Ecuadorian Football Federation announced on Sunday that Campana's injury would require continuous monitoring by the medical staff of La Tri, the national team, underscoring the team's commitment to ensuring the player's swift recovery.

In light of this unfortunate development, Argentine coach Sebastián Beccacece has opted to bring in a replacement: 17-year-old Elías Legendre, a promising winger who currently plays for Rennes in France's top division. Legendre has been with Rennes throughout his developmental career and holds a four-year contract with the club. This season, he has already made nine official appearances, including six in Ligue 1 and three in the Coupe de France, where he scored his first professional goal, showcasing his potential to make an impact on the international stage.

Ecuador's World Cup Journey Ahead

As Ecuador gears up for the World Cup set to kick off in June, the team is in the final stages of preparation, with two crucial friendlies on the horizon. The first match will take place against Morocco in Madrid on March 27, followed by a clash with the Netherlands in Eindhoven on March 31. During the South American qualifiers, Ecuador finished in a commendable second place, boasting one of the most formidable defenses in the group, conceding only five goals. However, the team has faced challenges in converting opportunities into goals, a concern highlighted by the performance of their all-time leading scorer, Enner Valencia, who currently plays for Pachuca in Mexico. This upcoming World Cup will mark Ecuador's fifth appearance, where they are set to face Germany, Curaçao, and Ivory Coast in Group E.
