Egypt Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Territorial Integrity and Strategic Cooperation

Egypt's Strong Endorsement of Morocco's Sovereignty

The Egyptian government has once again firmly expressed its unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity, as well as the United Nations Security Council resolution 2797, which endorses the Autonomy plan for the Sahara under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco. This declaration was made during a joint statement issued on Monday in Cairo, following the inaugural meeting of the Morocco-Egypt Coordination and Follow-up Committee. This meeting was co-chaired by Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations.

During the meeting, Egypt also praised King Mohammed VI for his leadership, particularly in his role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee. The King has been instrumental in supporting the resilience of the people of Al-Quds, helping to safeguard the cultural and religious identity of the city, as well as its legal status and historical significance as a symbol of coexistence among the three major Abrahamic faiths.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Economic Cooperation

Furthermore, the Egyptian government lauded the royal initiative aimed at assisting Sahel countries in gaining access to the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline project. This ambitious endeavor is designed to transport natural gas across 13 West African nations to Morocco and ultimately to Europe. The energy connection between Nigeria and Morocco is anticipated to serve as a vital catalyst for economic, industrial, and digital development, while also creating job opportunities and establishing a significant corridor that links Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic Basin.

In his opening remarks, Akhannouch emphasized that this meeting signifies the aspirations of both nations' leaders—King Mohammed VI and President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi—to invigorate bilateral relations, advancing them into a comprehensive and exemplary strategic partnership grounded in solidarity, economic integration, and political coordination on regional and international matters. He highlighted the importance of enhancing trade relations and urged the removal of administrative barriers to facilitate the smooth exchange of goods and promote mutual investment.

Akhannouch further articulated that economic integration between Morocco and Egypt should be founded on a win-win principle, emphasizing the need for direct logistical and maritime connectivity between the Port of Tangier Med and East Port Said, as well as along the Suez Canal corridor. This initiative aims to transform both countries into an integrated platform and gateway to markets across Africa, Europe, and Asia. He proposed the establishment of a Morocco-Egypt investment platform to enhance collaboration in solar and wind energy projects and to strengthen regional cooperation in renewable energy, particularly focusing on green hydrogen.

In addition, the first session of the Morocco-Egypt Coordination and Follow-up Committee was marked by the signing of 14 cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) across various sectors, including housing and urban development, tourism, energy, education and training, health and pharmaceuticals, customs, industry, combating desertification, water resource management, as well as youth, sports, and culture.
