Embracing Digital Transformation: Public Institutions Showcase Innovations at Gitex Africa in Marrakech

This year, numerous public institutions and administrations are actively participating in the Gitex Africa exhibition held in Marrakech, aiming to introduce both Moroccan and international visitors to the latest advancements in services brought about by the recent wave of digitalization. This initiative aligns with the strategies being implemented to achieve the goal of a 'Digital Morocco'. The institutions present span a significant area of the exhibition space, aptly named 'Digital Government', and encompass various sectors including justice, education, culture, communication, agriculture, and parliamentary relations. They collectively present what can be seen as a 'preliminary report' on the progress of service digitization and the integration of artificial intelligence technologies.

From her position as a judicial representative at the Public Prosecution, Huda Mreishi emphasized that the initiatives announced by the institution through the modernization and information systems sector aim to bring administration closer to citizens, whether they are within Morocco or abroad. Special attention is given to individuals with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity and effectiveness in service delivery. Mreishi elaborated in an interview that the digital platform dedicated to complaints, which launched in 2020, enables citizens to file and track their complaints without needing to visit courts or the Public Prosecution's headquarters. This platform employs a precise system for collecting data from both the complainant and the accused, allowing for the attachment of supporting documents and ensuring the security of the process through OTP verification, with text messages sent to the complainant's phone to keep them updated on all developments.

According to Mreishi, the Public Prosecution also offers other digital platforms, including one for reporting violence against women, an appointment request service, and a platform for the right to access information. She affirmed that a participatory approach necessitated the creation of a platform for suggestions and opinions, as well as a direct line for reporting corruption and bribery cases in real-time.

The youth sector, represented by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, is also taking part in this year's Gitex Africa exhibition, striving to showcase the outcomes of digitalizing services aimed at this demographic and to facilitate access to these services, particularly through the 'Youth Passport'. In this context, Mohsen Belafham, head of the information systems department in the youth sector, stated that this service is based on data from the national identity card issued by the General Directorate of National Security. It allows the targeted youth to benefit from various offers ranging from completely free services to preferential discounts.

Belafham further informed the press of ongoing coordination with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) and telecommunications companies to provide free access to the Youth Passport platform without requiring internet data. This initiative aims to ensure that young people in remote areas can benefit from these services, overcoming physical and technical barriers.

In addition to other public institutions, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool Education, and Sports is participating in this year’s Gitex Africa in Marrakech. Its representative, Aziz Wormasi, highlighted that the platforms developed aim to facilitate communication with educational administration and provide digital resources for students, teachers, and parents. Wormasi noted that the ministry can now digitally track the achievements of approximately 8 million students nationwide, contributing to the extraction of clear indicators regarding competency development and improving educational performance across various regions of the kingdom.

The same official considered that the new information system is a fundamental pillar for implementing the leadership institutions project, as it provides technical tools that allow for precise tracking of educational pathways, ensuring the effectiveness of current educational reforms by transitioning from results-based digital management to outcome-based management.
