Emmanuel Wanyonyi Set to Launch Diamond League Season in Rabat

Wanyonyi to Begin 2026 Diamond League Journey in Rabat

Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the reigning World and Olympic champion in athletics, is gearing up to commence his 2026 Diamond League campaign this weekend. The exciting event will take place at the Meeting International Mohammed VI in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday, May 31. At just 24 years old, Wanyonyi is already a formidable figure in the world of athletics, having clinched his third Diamond League title in the previous season. This weekend's race will see him return to his favored 800m event, marking his debut in this season's Diamond League series.

Following a remarkable year in 2025, where he showcased extraordinary talent and determination, Wanyonyi has only participated in one race this year. He impressed spectators by winning the 1500m event at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, clocking an astonishing time of 3:34.11. His performance was particularly noteworthy as he outpaced several renowned competitors, including Reynold Cheruiyot and the world champion Timothy Cheruiyot.

Challenging Competition Awaits Wanyonyi in Rabat

The Rabat event will be significant for Wanyonyi as it serves as the initial race in the Diamond League series for 2026. In the entry list for the event, he is set to face off against several formidable opponents, including Slimane Moula, a three-time Diamond League meet winner, and Gabriel Tual, the 2024 European champion. Additionally, Ireland's Mark English will be a strong contender, having already secured a victory in the series this year during the Shanghai event on May 16.

Another noteworthy competitor is America’s Donavan Brazier, alongside Great Britain's Max Burgin, who defeated Wanyonyi in Rabat last year. The stakes are high for Wanyonyi as he aims to avenge his previous loss, where he finished with a time of 1:43.37, trailing behind Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela and Burgin. This race not only offers Wanyonyi the opportunity to assert his dominance but also to add to his impressive tally of 12 Diamond League victories, as he seeks to secure a fourth win in the Moroccan capital.

The Rabat event represents the third leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, which commenced in Shanghai on May 16 and will culminate in the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5. The highly anticipated 800m race is slated to start at 10:45 PM Kenyan time, and all eyes will be on Wanyonyi as he embarks on this exciting journey in the Diamond League series.
