Empowering Women in Agriculture: A Call to Action on International Women’s Day 2026

International Women’s Day 2026: A Tribute to Women Workers in Agriculture

On March 8, 2026, the Organization of Women in the Agricultural Sector (FNSA) celebrates International Women’s Day under the powerful slogan, “A strong organization and continuous struggle in the service of women workers in the agricultural sector.” This year’s commemoration occurs amidst ongoing imperialist aggression and wars that have severely affected many communities, particularly the Palestinian people, who are enduring relentless violence. Despite the multitude of challenges they face, including brutal military tactics aimed at their annihilation, Palestinian women have emerged as formidable figures in the resistance, showcasing their unwavering strength, resilience, and deep connection to their heritage and land.

This year, our celebration is also overshadowed by significant climate disruptions that have wreaked havoc across our nation. Recently, severe floods and storms affected various cities, with Ksar El Kebir experiencing the worst of it, prompting widespread evacuations and forcing many residents to seek refuge in Larache for over a week. These environmental challenges, coupled with political, economic, and social upheavals, have created a dire situation for women globally, exacerbating conditions that hinder their progress and well-being.

Challenges Facing Women Workers and the Call for Equality

Despite ongoing efforts to dismantle stereotypes and achieve true equality in professional, economic, and political spheres, women in our country continue to face significant obstacles. The demands of feminist and trade union movements often go unheeded, while the rising costs of essential goods and services further diminish women's living standards. Systemic discrimination manifests in various forms—be it economic, social, or legal—leading to increased marginalization, exclusion, and violence against women, particularly among wage earners in the agricultural sector.

Legally, there is a stark contrast between the rights guaranteed by international conventions and constitutional provisions and the national laws that fail to uphold them. Discriminatory texts, including the Family Code and the Labor Code, highlight the lack of political will to establish genuine gender equality. Women working in agriculture—whether they are civil servants, employees, or hardworking peasants—experience similar challenges as their counterparts in various sectors. They frequently endure multiple forms of violence, including economic, psychological, and digital abuses, exacerbated by the absence of protective measures and the lack of ratification of International Convention No. 190, which advocates for a workplace free from violence and harassment.

Despite these adversities, the Organization of Women in the Agricultural Sector, alongside the Progressive Union of Women of Morocco, have tirelessly fought for the rights of women wage workers. As we mark this important day, we extend our solidarity to all women around the globe and make a heartfelt appeal to women in the agricultural sector to unite around their organization. It serves as a platform that articulates and defends their legitimate demands, striving towards dignity, equality, and social justice. Our collective strength and relentless struggle will continue to pave the way for a better future for women in agriculture.
