Expansion of Primary Healthcare Facilities in Morocco
The recent inauguration of several healthcare infrastructures across the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Guelmim-Oued Noun, Béni Mellal-Khénifra, the Oriental, Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, and Marrakech-Safi marks a significant step towards implementing the directives of King Mohammed VI. This initiative aims to reform and upgrade the national healthcare system, thereby enhancing the accessibility and quality of health services for citizens, as detailed in a statement from the Ministry of Health.
This initiative is part of a broader national program aimed at upgrading 1,600 primary healthcare establishments, with 500 slated for completion by 2026. This endeavor aligns with the ongoing efforts to expand social protection and improve the quality of basic healthcare services across the country.
Details of Newly Opened Primary Healthcare Centers
In the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region, the healthcare offering has been augmented with the opening of four new primary healthcare facilities located in the provinces of Azilal and Khénifra. Specifically, three health dispensaries have been launched in Azilal: 'Guimmi', 'Bouhrazen', and 'Ait Ouirar'. Additionally, the 'Sidi Bouaabad' dispensary has commenced operations in Khénifra province. Similarly, the Marrakech-Safi region has seen the establishment of five new healthcare centers in the Chichaoua province, which includes the urban health center of the second level named 'Imintanoute', the rural health center 'Douirane', the first-level rural health center 'Mzouda', along with the rural dispensaries 'Bouzouga' and 'Laadilate'.
Moreover, the Oriental region has strengthened its healthcare services with the launch of three new centers distributed between Jerada and Berkane provinces. This includes the first-level rural health center 'Ouled Saleh' and the rural dispensary 'Souihla' in Jerada, alongside the first-level urban health center 'Al Qods' in Berkane. In Casablanca-Settat, the first-level urban health center 'Dar Bouazza' is now operational in Nouaceur province, while the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region has enhanced its healthcare offerings with the introduction of the second-level rural health center 'Bni Gmil Maksouline' in Al Hoceïma province.
In Guelmim-Oued Noun, a new tuberculosis and respiratory disease diagnostic center has been established in Guelmim province. This facility is dedicated to early detection and diagnostic services for tuberculosis, as well as providing care and follow-up for patients diagnosed with tuberculosis and respiratory conditions, thereby enhancing diagnostic capabilities and ensuring continuity of care.
These healthcare centers are part of a new generation of primary health institutions designed to expand regional healthcare services and bring medical assistance closer to the population, which is estimated at over 375,677 residents. The Ministry emphasizes that these facilities aim to meet the increasing demand for healthcare, improve service accessibility, enhance service quality, and create better patient reception and orientation conditions.
To ensure the effective functioning of these healthcare establishments, the Ministry of Health has committed to equipping them with high-quality biomedical equipment and has mobilized qualified human resources, comprising 50 healthcare professionals tasked with delivering medical and nursing care, as stated in the ministry's announcement. Residents will thus gain access to a diverse range of services, which include general medical consultations, nursing care, chronic disease monitoring—particularly for diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory illnesses—as well as maternal and child health services, school health, health education and awareness programs, epidemiological surveillance, and mobile health initiatives.
