Strengthening Healthcare Access Across Morocco
In a significant move to bolster the national health service, 15 new primary healthcare institutions commenced operations on September 8, 2026, across six regions, including Casablanca-Settat, Guelmim-Oued Noun, Beni Mellal-Khenifra, the East, Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, and Marrakech-Safi. This initiative comes as a direct response to the directives issued by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Mr. Ameen Tahraoui, aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality in Morocco. These newly inaugurated facilities were made operational following extensive rehabilitation and equipping processes, ensuring they meet modern healthcare standards.
This expansion aligns with the royal directives from His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which emphasize the urgent need for reforming and upgrading the national health system. The goal is to improve treatment offerings and bring healthcare services closer to the populace. This initiative is part of a broader national program aimed at rehabilitating 1,600 primary healthcare institutions, with a target of 500 institutions to be operational by the end of 2026. This effort complements the overarching strategy for expanding social coverage and enhancing the quality of essential health services.
New Facilities and Their Impact on Community Health
Within the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region, four primary healthcare institutions have become operational, serving the populations of Azilal and Khenifra provinces. These include three health centers in Azilal: "Kimi," "Bouharzan," and "Ait Ouirar," along with the "Sidi Bouabid" health center in Khenifra. In the Marrakech-Safi region, five new primary healthcare facilities have been launched in the Chichaoua province, including the level 2 urban health center "Imintanout," the level 2 rural health center "Adouiran," and the level 1 rural health center "Mazouda," alongside two rural dispensaries, "Bouzouka" and "Laadilates." Additionally, the East region has seen the introduction of three primary healthcare institutions with the opening of the level 1 rural health center "Oulad Saleh" and the rural dispensary Suihla in the Jerada province, and the level 1 urban health center "Al Quds" in Berkan province.
The Casablanca-Settat region has seen the launch of the level 1 urban health center "Dar Bouazza" in the Nouaceur province, while the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region welcomed the level 2 rural health center "Beni Jamil Miksoulin" in the Al Hoceima province. Furthermore, the Guelmim-Oued Noun region has added a tuberculosis diagnostic center in Guelmim, focusing on early detection and treatment of tuberculosis and respiratory diseases, thereby improving diagnostic capabilities and treatment continuity.
These health centers, part of a new generation of primary healthcare institutions, aim to enhance health service access and cater to a target population of over 375,677 residents. They are designed to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services while improving accessibility and quality, as well as enhancing the conditions for reception and guidance.
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has equipped these facilities with high-quality biomedical equipment and mobilized a skilled workforce of 50 health professionals dedicated to providing medical and nursing services. Patients will benefit from a diverse range of treatments, including general medical examinations, nursing care, chronic disease monitoring—particularly diabetes and hypertension—maternal and child health services, school health initiatives, health education, and epidemiological surveillance, alongside mobile health services.
