Enhancing Military Collaboration: U.S. and Morocco's Link-16 Integration During African Lion 26

Strengthening Interoperability in Military Operations

In a significant move to enhance military cooperation, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa, alongside the U.S. Marine Forces Africa, successfully executed the inaugural interoperability test of secure encrypted communications and tactical datalinks with the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces. This pivotal event took place during the African Lion 2026 final planning session held on February 3, 2026, in Agadir, Morocco. The focus was on establishing a robust communication framework that would enable seamless collaboration between U.S. and Moroccan forces, thereby strengthening their operational capabilities.

The testing involved the demonstration of Secure Link-16 datalink communications, which are crucial for maintaining secure and reliable communication channels. An encrypted ultra-high frequency voice connection was established between the tactical terminals of both nations, facilitating real-time text messaging and voice communication. This capability is essential for operational success as it allows forces to communicate directly and securely, significantly enhancing their coordination and situational awareness in various operational environments.

Real-Time Data Sharing for Enhanced Command and Control

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Babak Kermanshahi, who serves as a theater operations planner at Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa, and U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Kyle Repetti, an operations officer with U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa, played pivotal roles in testing Morocco's ability to securely share real-time battlespace data across air, land, and maritime domains. This effort is aimed at bolstering coalition command and control, which is vital for effective military operations.

Maj. Repetti emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This effort tested Morocco’s ability to integrate into a coalition force through a highly survivable, encrypted, and jam-resistant tactical data link, bolstering cross-domain communications." The ability to share real-time data across different domains not only improves situational awareness but also enhances coordination among commanders, planners, and operators, thereby increasing the overall effectiveness of military strategies.

Master Sgt. Kermanshahi noted that this integration exemplifies how meticulous planning can lead to tangible operational capabilities. He highlighted that one of the primary objectives of African Lion is to foster integration and interoperability by implementing advanced capabilities that enhance collaboration among participating forces. The integration of these technologies and systems signifies a crucial step toward achieving a more cohesive and responsive military alliance, essential for addressing the complex security challenges in the region.
