Revitalizing Ecotourism Through Hunting in Morocco

On October 2, 2023, a significant seminar was held in Marrakech, focusing on the potential development of ecotourism through hunting in Morocco, showcasing the rich natural and hunting resources the kingdom possesses. Organized by the National Agency for Water and Forests in collaboration with the Royal Moroccan Hunting Federation, this event marked the commencement of the 2026-2027 hunting season. It served as a platform for discussions and knowledge exchange among various stakeholders and professionals in the hunting sector, particularly emphasizing the growing interest in bow hunting as a new offering that could diversify and enhance Morocco's hunting tourism product while stimulating local economies.

During the event, Abdel Rahim Houmi, the Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests, highlighted the "growing dynamics" within the ecotourism hunting sector, supported by 146 specialized companies, and outlined ongoing efforts to diversify hunting products and services. He noted that promoting bow hunting would enhance the appeal of this activity and highlight its environmental and tourism potential. Ahmed Moussaoui, the president of the Royal Moroccan Hunting Federation, reiterated the federation's commitment to advancing responsible, ethical, and safe hunting practices aligned with the objectives of the national strategy "Forests of Morocco 2020-2030." He emphasized the need for ongoing governance improvement and mobilization of various stakeholders to ensure a balance between biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of hunting resources, while also enhancing rural and natural spaces and contributing to local economic and social development.

Art and Environmental Awareness: Exploring Water's Significance

The first edition of the "Creative Energies" exhibition is currently underway at the Museum of Water Civilization in Morocco, running until October 30, 2023. This collective exhibition features twelve artists who reflect on the theme of "water, the source of life and creativity." It is organized by the Association for the Development of Art, Culture, Ecology, Heritage, and Environment, with support from the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication (Culture Sector), in partnership with the Argan Association, the Ministry of Religious Endowments and Islamic Affairs, the Municipality of Marrakech, and the Italian Embassy. The exhibition fosters dialogue among diverse artistic practices and perspectives concerning water, encouraging artists to express their impressions and reflections on this vital resource while questioning human attitudes and behaviors towards it. This initiative aims to transcend simplistic perceptions of water, opening a space for contemplation on the relationship between humanity, its environment, and natural resources.

In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency, artist Valérie Erbin expressed her delight in participating in this water-themed exhibition at the Museum of Water Civilization, calling it an exceptional venue for addressing such a timely topic. She is presenting a series of artworks titled "Random Worlds," focusing on the issue of water scarcity. Similarly, artist Ilham Laakari highlighted her contribution of three oil paintings inspired by the Quranic verse "And We made from water every living thing," creatively interpreting this concept through a binary language (using 1 and 0) incorporated into her artistic compositions.

The exhibition addresses critical issues such as water, drought, climate change, and the resilience of local territories, emphasizing the need for dialogue and questioning through art.

In summary, both the ecotourism hunting initiatives and the artistic explorations of water in Morocco signify a broader commitment to sustainability, environmental awareness, and the promotion of local economies. As Morocco navigates the challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity loss, these efforts illustrate how cultural and natural resources can be leveraged to foster dialogue, innovation, and community engagement.
