Environmental Decline at Bab Doukkala Taxi Station in Marrakech: A Call for Action

The area surrounding the Bab Doukkala taxi station in Marrakech is experiencing a significant environmental decline that has raised concerns among local residents and visitors alike. The wall facing the station, situated near a historical monument, has unfortunately become a ‘black spot’ marked by the accumulation of waste and the spread of unpleasant odors. This situation detracts from the aesthetic appeal of the public space in the vicinity.

According to observations made by the newspaper “Al-Omq,” this historically symbolic area adjacent to the ‘Seven Men’ monument has fallen victim to random exploitation, leading to the collection of various types of garbage. The lack of cleaning and monitoring operations has transformed this site into what resembles an open landfill. The community activist, Mohamed Chaker, emphasized that the issue goes beyond mere waste accumulation; it includes the emission of foul odors that are unbearable, alongside inappropriate behaviors occurring around the wall. These factors exacerbate the environmental degradation and negatively impact the comfort of users of this vital space.

In a statement to “Al-Omq,” Mohamed Chaker pointed out that the current situation represents an environmental and aesthetic setback for an area that serves as a crucial gateway to the city, housing a bus station and a taxi stand. He noted that the unpleasant odors have become a permanent feature of this facade. The Bab Doukkala area welcomes a significant number of travelers daily, both from within the city and beyond, along with tourists. Such scenes directly tarnish Marrakech's image as a global tourist destination, especially since the location serves as a major transit point to several neighborhoods and essential facilities.

The activist also highlighted that the persistence of this situation reflects a lack of effective interventions from the relevant authorities, both in terms of sanitation and monitoring. He called for the adoption of a sustainable approach to preserve the beauty of public spaces and protect historically significant landmarks. Chaker further noted that the rehabilitation of this area requires more than temporary campaigns; it necessitates the establishment of permanent mechanisms, including the installation of sufficient waste bins and the regular presence of cleaning teams to maintain cleanliness and safety.

In conclusion, community activist Mohamed Chaker urged the local council and authorities to intervene urgently to address this situation and restore the integrity of this vital space, aligning with the status of Marrakech as a tourist destination while simultaneously meeting the residents' and users' expectations for a clean and safe environment.
