The European Union has allocated approximately €115 million to Spain aimed at managing migration challenges in the North African exclave of Ceuta. This substantial funding is intended to enhance border security and monitoring, ensuring a more effective response to the ongoing migration crisis. Additionally, the financial support will focus on providing dignified accommodation for unaccompanied minors and facilitating the repatriation of individuals without legal residency, as announced by the EU Commission in Brussels.
On July 30 and 31, reports indicated that around 72,000 migrants swam from Morocco to Ceuta or climbed over border fences, a situation that highlighted the urgent need for intervention. While many of these migrants returned within hours, several thousand remained in the area even weeks later, despite it being smaller than Frankfurt Airport. The exact number of migrants still present in Ceuta remains unclear, according to the regional president responsible for the region.
