European Organization Denounces Morocco's Digital Surveillance Against Sahrawi Rights Defenders

In Budapest, the "Association of Friendship Committees with the Sahrawi People in Central and Eastern Europe" has strongly condemned Morocco's extensive digital surveillance system aimed at silencing journalists, activists, and human rights defenders from the Sahrawi community. This condemnation came in light of reports indicating that the Moroccan authorities employ sophisticated surveillance measures not only to collect data but also as a systematic tool for fabricating charges, executing arrests, and orchestrating smear campaigns through pro-Moroccan media outlets. The objective is to stifle voices advocating for the right to self-determination and freedom in Western Sahara.

The organization emphasized that this surveillance infrastructure is designed to invade the privacy of individuals by intercepting communications, taking photographs, and recording conversations in private spaces. It also includes gathering information about individuals from their surroundings, thus enabling a comprehensive tracking of their movements. The notorious "Pegasus" spyware, developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, has been highlighted as one of the primary tools used by Moroccan intelligence since 2017, alongside the country's telecommunications provider, Maroc Telecom. This software allows the authorities to infiltrate the devices of their targets and monitor their activities closely.

In its statement, the association has called for the immediate release of Sahrawi political prisoners and an independent investigation into the violations committed by Moroccan intelligence agencies. It has also urged the implementation of a global ban on the sale and transfer of surveillance technology to Morocco until there are guarantees in place to ensure the respect of human rights. The organization reiterated its strong condemnation of the oppressive policies implemented by the Moroccan authorities, asserting that such measures will not deter the Sahrawi people from continuing their legitimate struggle for full freedom and independence.
