European Union Emphasizes Diplomatic Resolution for Western Sahara Conflict
In a recent statement, the European Union reiterated its commitment to prioritizing diplomatic negotiations and a political resolution to the ongoing regional dispute over Western Sahara. This affirmation came in a written response from the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kalas, addressing questions raised by several members of the European Parliament. Kalas underscored that the current moment is not one for escalation, but rather for engaging in fruitful negotiations, urging all parties involved to adhere to international law and humanitarian principles.
Furthermore, Kalas expressed the EU's support for the latest United Nations Security Council resolution, number 2797, issued on October 31. This resolution emphasized that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the sole foundation for any resolution to the regional conflict. The European official highlighted that Brussels is determined to implement its strategic guidelines aimed at preserving and enhancing its longstanding relationship with Morocco, which it regards as a key and traditional partner, particularly in economic, trade, and security sectors.
In this context, Kalas reaffirmed the significance of the EU's enduring partnership with Morocco across various fields of bilateral cooperation, including trade. This demonstrates Brussels' commitment to maintaining dynamic relations with Morocco, while supporting the UN-led political process and enhancing cooperation on priority issues, notably trade, economic collaboration, migration, and regional security.
