The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, is set to embark on a significant visit to Morocco this Thursday and Friday. This marks her inaugural trip to the neighboring country of Spain since taking office, highlighting the growing diplomatic ties between the EU and Morocco. According to the European External Action Service (EEAS), Kallas is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, which will be followed by a joint press conference in Rabat, the Moroccan capital.
During her visit, Kallas will engage with women leaders from various sectors, emphasizing the EU's commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in leadership roles. Additionally, she will visit the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez, where she will participate in a dialogue with a group of students, fostering educational exchanges and collaboration.
This meeting follows a previous encounter between Kallas and Bourita in Brussels on January 29, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the EU-Morocco Association Agreement. At that time, both parties underscored the depth and vitality of their relationship, which has consistently strengthened over the years in pursuit of mutual interests and a shared aspiration for a future characterized by prosperity, peace, and security.
In a joint statement released after their previous meeting, both the EU and Morocco reaffirmed the importance of their strategic, enduring, and multidimensional partnership. The European side reiterated its commitment to Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, viewing it as a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable basis. They also emphasized the need to resume dialogue without preconditions and to work towards a political solution that includes the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
Moreover, the two sides discussed other international scenarios, including the Middle East, where they reiterated their support for a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel. They also shared the view that a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace is essential in Ukraine, reaffirming their support for the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity while calling for respect for international law.
