Introduction to the Exhibition
The Borj Bab Marrakech Gallery in Essaouira is currently hosting a captivating collective exhibition titled "My Journey with Women: In the Sanctuary of Art," which will run until March 20, 2026. This event immerses visitors in the themes of feminine resilience and art therapy through a diverse array of artworks rich in symbolism and emotional depth. Organized by the talented painter Mustapha Ben Malek in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Culture in Essaouira, the exhibition showcases approximately thirty artistic works created by female artists from various local, national, and international scenes, reflecting the multitude of perspectives on women's conditions.
Art as a Medium of Expression and Healing
Through their creations, these artists invite the audience to explore the concept of women as a source of inspiration and as agents of resilience and transformation. The exhibition emphasizes art as a space for inner expression and healing, aligning closely with the principles of art therapy. Speaking to the MAP, Mustapha Ben Malek noted that this exhibition coincides with the celebration of International Women’s Day, gathering female talents from several Moroccan cities, including Tangier, Guercif, Marrakech, Tan-Tan, and Essaouira, as well as from foreign countries such as Norway, France, Australia, and Luxembourg. This rich diversity adds a multifaceted artistic and cultural dimension to the event.
The self-taught artist, Ben Malek, explained that the theme of this exhibition is deeply intertwined with his personal journey. His artistic focus on the female figure is heavily influenced by his upbringing among five sisters, coupled with personal experiences that have heightened his sensitivity to the realities and challenges faced by women. Fellow artist Nadia Jeradi remarked that her participation in this exhibition celebrates the "feminine energies" that shine brightly across all areas of life. "Through my works, I aim to highlight women's ability to reveal their talents and assert themselves powerfully," she stated, viewing the exhibition as a true "artistic celebration" and a valuable opportunity for artists to showcase their capabilities and serve as inspiring role models for young girls.
Artist Maryam Serakhi shared that her work revolves around the representation of the human face, which she considers a memory imbued with experiences and stories. Through color and composition, she seeks to establish a visual dialogue that reflects the depth of human experience within the female form. Additionally, Fatima Mazirh presented a piece titled "The Spirit of Gnaoua Music," where she intertwines traditional music with the prominent female figure, using rich symbolism, including the seven traditional colors, candles, incense, and flags, to illustrate the cultural significance and sacred dimension of women in the heritage of Essaouira.
Visitor Youssef Lakdim highlighted the "exceptional" nature of this artistic event, which encompasses a wide spectrum of expressions, from denouncing violence against women to celebrating heritage. He praised Mustapha Ben Malek's journey, noting his talent and perseverance in establishing himself in the Essaouira artistic scene. "My Journey with Women: In the Sanctuary of Art" invites art lovers and cultural enthusiasts to discover a collective plastic experience that celebrates women and their creativity in all its diversity.
