'Prelude and Fugue' Exhibition at Bab Rouah Gallery
From October 2 to October 19, 2026, the Bab Rouah Gallery in Rabat will host an intriguing exhibition titled "Prelude and Fugue," featuring the remarkable works of artist Itaf Benjelloun. This exhibition showcases a diverse collection of creations made from materials such as iron, clay, wood, and photography. Each of these materials bears the marks of previous use, accidents, or stories, contributing to the narrative depth of the artwork. Everyday objects like a chair leg, a harrow, or a spiral have been repurposed, stripped of their original functions to serve as foundational elements in Benjelloun's innovative artistic expressions. In a statement, Benjelloun reflects on her artistic philosophy, stating, "My true material is neither metal, glass, photography, nor even light. It is time: the time it takes for a memory to surface, the time it takes for a gaze to reconstruct a face." This exhibition is a culmination of her journey in art, which she has been passionately pursuing alongside her career as an interior architect since 1997.
A Collaborative Artistic Dialogue
The exhibition will also feature the work of Senegalese artist Anta Germaine Gaye, whose participation introduces a fresh perspective on materiality. Gaye's work resonates with themes explored in her previous exhibit, "Living the Gap," presented in Dakar during the OFF section of Dak'Art 2026. Curated by Hasnae Lachgar, "Prelude and Fugue" aims to foster a dialogue between material, memory, and transformation, inviting viewers to engage with the layered complexities of both artists' works and the stories they convey.
