Unveiling a Unique Perspective on Women's Lives

On August 16, 2026, the acclaimed director Sonia Al-Turab embarked on an innovative journey into digital drama with her new series titled "Girls' Bathrooms." Premiering on July 28 and running through the end of August 2026 on the Liik platform and YouTube, this short series masterfully intertwines comedy and audacity to spotlight an unconventional aspect of women's lives in the nightlife of Marrakech.

The series, filmed in the vibrant Red City, revolves around three friends, portrayed by Sofia Belkamel, Ghita Barada, and Awatif Hammami, who share a long-standing bond. Their story unfolds within the confines of bar and nightclub restrooms as they seek justice for one of their own who has been wronged. Comprising seven brief episodes, each ranging from one and a half to three minutes, the series promises a fresh narrative that challenges typical portrayals of women.

A Creative Shift from Public to Intimate Spaces

According to Le360, the concept for this work originated in 2017 when Sonia Al-Turab was developing her previous digital series, "Moroccan Women." In her latest project, she transitioned from the public sphere to a more intimate setting, focusing on the restrooms of bars and nightclubs. Al-Turab explained that these spaces serve as a sanctuary for women, allowing them to converse, laugh, and share personal experiences away from the prying eyes of the world. She believes this environment holds immense potential for dramatic exploration.

Opting for a dramatic format rather than direct documentation, Al-Turab aimed to respect the privacy of women, transforming the initial idea into a short series featuring characters partly inspired by the personal experiences of the participating actresses. This approach seeks to present a different image of Moroccan women, moving beyond the constraints of suffering and violence to highlight themes of friendship, joy, solidarity, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Since its debut, the series has captured considerable attention, earning an opportunity to participate in the upcoming 16th edition of the Marseille Web Fest scheduled for October 2026. By relying on short episodes that align with the rhythm of digital platforms and the growing trend of "mini-dramas," Sonia Al-Turab aims to reach a broader audience while maintaining her presence in auteur cinema and film festivals.
