Farouk Mehdaoui Faces Legal Consequences
Farouk Mehdaoui, a local councillor and member of the Democratic Left Federation (FGD), has been sentenced to three months in prison, suspended, by the Rabat Court of First Instance. In addition to the suspended sentence, Mehdaoui is required to pay a fine of 10,000 dirhams and 28,000 dirhams in damages to the plaintiff. The legal action against him was initiated due to allegations of spreading false claims and defamatory statements aimed at harming the private lives of individuals. This controversy arose from his opposition to demolition operations conducted by local authorities in the Océan district of Rabat, where a supporter of these operations claimed to have been falsely accused by the councillor.
Furthermore, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) has expressed outrage over the verdict, emphasizing that it undermines freedom of opinion and expression. Mehdaoui, who also holds the position of vice president within the AMDH, has faced significant challenges following his election. Notably, he was removed from the electoral rolls the day after being nominated as a candidate for the FGD in the capital. Earlier this month, he announced plans to appeal against the decision made by the administrative court of Rabat, which dismissed his request to annul his removal from the electoral list.
