Fes Advances Sports Infrastructure with Major Stadium Revamp
The city of Fes has taken significant steps towards enhancing its sports infrastructure by approving a partnership aimed at rehabilitating the renowned Hassan II Stadium, with an estimated investment of nearly 400 million Moroccan Dirhams (MAD). This decision was reached during an extraordinary council session held on April 7, 2026, where various agreements were ratified to improve the city's transportation and sports facilities, ultimately strengthening Fes's status as a scientific capital and enhancing service quality for both residents and visitors alike.
The approved project for the Hassan II Stadium includes a comprehensive reconstruction plan that allocates funding from multiple sources: the Fes Municipality is contributing 40 million MAD, while the Fes-Meknes Region and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation are each providing 100 million MAD. Additionally, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports is earmarking 150 million MAD for the project. The rehabilitation works will encompass upgrades to the seating areas, natural grass pitch, changing rooms for players and referees, warm-up areas, medical and technical examination rooms, an information center, as well as fully equipped sanitary and administrative facilities.
Modern Transportation and Additional Projects
In conjunction with the stadium project, the council also approved the establishment of a modern bus station, with a budget of approximately 300 million MAD, of which the Fes Municipality will contribute 100 million MAD. This initiative aims to modernize the public transport system, improve traffic flow, alleviate congestion at existing stations, and enhance connectivity between Fes and other cities while providing advanced facilities for travelers and drivers. The new bus station will be constructed on a 6-hectare site within the jurisdiction of Ain Chkef, in the Moulay Yacoub region, and will include waiting areas, ticket offices, passenger loading and unloading zones, as well as parking spaces for buses and taxis, complete with information screens displaying travel schedules.
Moreover, the council greenlit additional projects, including the establishment of a football training center for the Maghreb Association Sportive of Fes, with a budget of 100 million MAD, and the reconstruction of the central market at an estimated cost of 120 million MAD, which will span 3,618 square meters and feature commercial activity floors along with parking and logistical services. The session also included the approval of a request for funding from the Collective Equipment Fund to support developmental projects, the reallocation of 13,325,000 MAD for the completion of sports fields and facilities, equipping weekly markets, launching public wireless internet networks in key squares and streets, and expanding cultural and artistic partnerships with local associations.
During the meeting, the Mayor of Fes, Abdel Salam Bekali, emphasized that these projects represent a crucial step towards enhancing the city's appeal and cultural and sporting prominence. He reaffirmed the council's commitment to coordinating efforts with all partners to promote economic and social development, ultimately achieving the welfare of the city’s residents and its visitors.
