Fes Prosecution Takes Action on Extortion Allegations
On September 13, 2026, the Attorney General at the Fes Court of Appeal made an announcement regarding the decision to resume the investigation into a complaint filed by a prisoner who alleged extortion and threats during the 2021 electoral campaign. This decision follows the emergence of new information disclosed during a press conference held by one of the lawyers representing the complainant.
A statement from the prosecution indicated that some details revealed by the defense at the press conference were not included in the original complaint. This prompted the authorities to reactivate the investigation and to take appropriate legal measures based on what the further inquiries might uncover.
The complainant, who was previously an inmate at the Ras El Ma prison, submitted his complaint on June 23, 2025, against several individuals. The Deputy Attorney General visited the prison on three separate occasions—August 8, 11, and 17 of that year—to hear his testimony and gather more information related to the allegations. However, during these meetings, the complainant failed to provide any statements, citing reasons such as fatigue, awaiting consultation with his lawyer, and participating in a hunger strike. Consequently, the prosecution temporarily shelved the case on August 29, 2025, due to insufficient details and evidence to support the allegations.
On July 14, 2026, the complainant’s defense submitted a request to reopen the case, but the prosecution maintained its decision, citing the lack of new elements or additional evidence in the request. The Attorney General confirmed that the new information that surfaced during the recent press conference has led the prosecution to resume the investigation into this matter, with legal actions to be determined based on the outcomes of the inquiry.
