FIFA Implements Major Changes to VAR Technology Ahead of Morocco vs France Match

In a significant move, FIFA has announced the implementation of innovative changes to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, set to take effect during the quarterfinal match of the 2026 World Cup between Morocco and France. This decision marks a notable shift in how VAR operates within the tournament, as detailed by the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

For the first time in the current World Cup edition, FIFA has decided to position the VAR officials within the stadiums rather than in a central location. Previously, the VAR officials operated from the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) located in Dallas, Texas, receiving live feeds from all matches across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The new procedure, now in place for the Morocco vs France match at Boston's stadium, aims to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of VAR during critical moments of the game.

New VAR Implementation in the Quarterfinals

This change has been introduced with the intention of ensuring that VAR can function seamlessly throughout the entire match duration, which could last up to 120 minutes if extra time is needed. Under FIFA's regulations, matches cannot be halted due to technical failures in the VAR system, prompting the need for this precautionary measure. By having the officials on-site, FIFA aims to prevent any potential issues that could arise during the matches.

For the Morocco versus France game, Uruguayan referee Leodan Gonzalez will oversee the VAR operations, accompanied by his assistant, Tatiana Guzman from Nicaragua. Additionally, the match will feature a diverse officiating team, including six Argentine officials, with Facundo Tello serving as the main referee.

The quarterfinal match is set to kick off at 11 PM Doha time, with other matches scheduled to follow, including Spain vs Belgium and England vs Norway. As FIFA continues to adapt and improve its officiating standards, this new approach to VAR will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike.
