FIFA President Gianni Infantino has emerged from a successful emergency meeting in Morocco with a positive outlook, as he shared on his Instagram account. The Swiss football executive finds himself in the midst of a major crisis, yet expressed his satisfaction after engaging in constructive discussions with members of the FIFA executive committee. Infantino joyfully recounted his experience watching a women's Africa Cup match between Malawi and Zambia, highlighting the day filled with fruitful conversations.
During his visit at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, Infantino was accompanied by Secretary General Mattias Grafström, who recently expressed concerns over the failed proposal to sell World Cup rights to investors. In an internal email to FIFA staff, Grafström described the series of events surrounding the plan as “sad and regrettable” and noted the unrest it caused. Following the meeting, it was reported that Grafström and the management board members reaffirmed their “unwavering support” for Infantino, emphasizing his position as the only official elected by the 211 FIFA member associations. A letter jointly addressed to FIFA members by Infantino and Grafström stated that the FIFA would no longer tolerate any attacks on its integrity, corporate governance, or adherence to proper procedures, and vowed to take necessary measures to protect its name and reputation.
FIFA Acknowledges Missteps in Investor Plans
In a further acknowledgment of shortcomings, FIFA admitted to errors in handling the investor plans. The organization recognized that it was not the intent to make the FIFA Council and member associations feel excluded from the process, and affirmed that the situation should have been managed differently. Infantino had recently sparked outrage in the football community when the controversial plans came to light.
