Five Arrests Linked to Electoral Irregularities in Morocco
In a significant development following the electoral process held on September 23, Moroccan authorities have confirmed the arrest of five individuals in connection with alleged irregularities during the voting. The arrests include the presidents of two electoral tables from a voting center in Tangier, their substitutes, and an additional individual, as stated by the Moroccan Public Prosecutor's Office in a recent communiqué.
The investigation was initiated after reports surfaced regarding a polling official caught with a bag containing ballot papers, alongside the circulation of a video that showed a transparent ballot box filled with several white envelopes, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
Despite these incidents, the elections were largely conducted without major disruptions, with the notable exception of isolated incidents in Tangier. The results of the election saw the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), a liberal political party, emerge victorious, securing 97 seats in the parliament. However, the election also recorded a staggering abstention rate of 62%, the highest in two decades.
Now, it is up to King Mohammed VI to invite a member of the PAM, as the party with the most votes, to form the new government, although there is no legal timeframe for this appointment to take place.
