Five Moroccan Museums Awarded First 'Museum of Morocco' Label

A Historic Milestone for Moroccan Museums

On March 11, 2026, a significant event took place at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat, where the National Museum Foundation (FNM) awarded the inaugural 'Museum of Morocco' labels to five distinguished institutions. This groundbreaking initiative aims to elevate the standard of museums across the kingdom, ensuring they meet international benchmarks in conservation, management, and the promotion of their collections. This recognition marks the beginning of a comprehensive network of museums that adhere to global standards.

Celebrating Morocco's Rich Heritage

The 2026 awardees reflect the diverse cultural heritage of Morocco, showcasing institutions with complementary missions. Notably, in Fès, the Nejjarine Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts received recognition for its dedication to preserving and showcasing centuries-old artisanal crafts. Housed within an exquisitely restored 18th-century fondouq, the museum displays intricate wooden carvings and traditional tools, illustrating the historical craftsmanship in woodwork.

In the capital city of Rabat, the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum was honored. Opened in 2002 within a stunning Art Deco building, this museum boasts one of the most remarkable numismatic collections in the Arab world, chronicling Morocco's monetary history from ancient times to the present. It also features a prominent collection of visual arts, including works by renowned Moroccan and Orientalist artists. Meanwhile, Marrakech shone brightly with three of its cultural gems receiving the prestigious label.

The Al Maaden Museum of African Contemporary Art (MACAAL) has established itself as a prominent player in the contemporary African art scene, known for its bold programming and ever-evolving collection that attracts art enthusiasts from across the continent. Close to the Majorelle Garden, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum pays tribute to the legendary designer and his deep connection to Marrakech, showcasing an exceptional selection of garments, accessories, and sketches that narrate his illustrious career. Lastly, the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts, also located in the Majorelle Garden, offers a captivating journey through the diverse Amazigh cultures, featuring jewelry, textiles, pottery, and everyday objects collected with care by Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent.

This prestigious label is not merely an honorary distinction, as it is valid for four years and can be renewed. It confirms that the accredited institutions adhere to strict criteria regarding preventive conservation, collection management, security, accessibility, and public engagement. The label is awarded by a multidisciplinary commission following the provisions of laws n°56-20 related to museums and 55.20, which amends the founding law of the FNM.

Led by Mehdi Qotbi, the commission responsible for evaluation commended the quality of submissions and the commitment demonstrated by the teams involved. It included representatives from key heritage and safety institutions, ensuring a holistic approach to the evaluation process. In a cultural landscape where Morocco is increasingly asserting its presence on the international stage—evidenced by the success of the Sacred Music Festival and the growing influx of foreign visitors to its museums—this label aspires to become a benchmark for excellence. According to the FNM, it embodies the royal vision and ambition to elevate Moroccan museums to international standards, respecting global criteria while showcasing the nation's rich cultural and heritage assets.

In a call to action, the FNM encourages all Moroccan museums—be they public, private, or non-profit—to submit their applications for this label, aiming to generalize this excellence-driven initiative and position the national museum network as a key player in the cultural promotion of the kingdom. Interested museums can contact the Foundation to obtain the application guidelines and requirements.
