Five Moroccan Museums Awarded the Prestigious 'Museum of Morocco' Label

Recognition for Moroccan Cultural Institutions

On March 11, 2026, a significant ceremony was held at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI) in Rabat, where the National Foundation of Museums (FNM) officially awarded the first ever 'Museum of Morocco' labels to five distinguished institutions. The museums that received this prestigious certification include the Nejjarine Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts in Fes, the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum in Rabat, and the Al Maaden Museum of African Contemporary Art (MACAAL), along with the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts, both located in Marrakech.

This label, which is valid for four years and renewable, signifies that these museums adhere to high standards of collection conservation, management, and valorization. It is part of a legal framework defined by Law No. 56-20 concerning museums and Law 55.20, which amends and complements Law 01.09 that established the FNM. This initiative reflects the royal ambition to elevate Moroccan museums to international standards while respecting global criteria, thereby ensuring high-quality cultural institutions that reflect Morocco's rich heritage.

Commitment to Excellence in Museum Practices

The commission responsible for granting this label is chaired by Mehdi Qotbi, president of the FNM, and includes representatives from various governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the General Directorate of Customs and Indirect Taxes, the General Directorate of Civil Protection, and the Rabat Region Historical Heritage Society. The FNM also encourages all Moroccan museums to submit their applications for this label to promote excellence and uplift the cultural scene in the country.
