High-Level Diplomatic Talks Between France and Morocco

Jean-Noël Barrot recently undertook an official visit to Morocco, where he engaged in significant discussions with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. This visit underscored the commitment of both nations to deepen their diplomatic and economic ties, marking a pivotal moment in their bilateral relations.

During these high-level talks, Barrot emphasized France's unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity, reaffirming the stance previously articulated by French President Emmanuel Macron in a letter to King Mohammed VI in 2024 concerning the Sahara issue. Barrot asserted that Morocco’s autonomy proposal is the sole foundation for achieving a "just, lasting and negotiated solution" to the regional dispute.

The dialogue also aimed at fostering the expansion of cooperation between Rabat and Paris, with Barrot announcing the initiation of what he termed a "unique initiative" to forge a bilateral treaty between France and Morocco. He highlighted that this treaty would represent a groundbreaking agreement for France, as it would be the first of its kind with a non-European nation.

In a further development, Bourita revealed plans for an anticipated state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, indicating that this visit would coincide with the signing of an "unprecedented political, legal and historic agreement" between the two longstanding allies, signaling a new chapter in their collaborative efforts.
