France Reaffirms Its Support for Morocco's Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

France's Firm Stance on Morocco's Sovereignty

On July 19, 2026, in a significant diplomatic meeting held in Rabat, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu reiterated his country's unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. This affirmation came during a press conference following the high-level Moroccan-French meeting, co-chaired by Lecornu and Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. Lecornu emphasized, "This position, and I reiterate it here, is steadfast and will not change, with all the consequences that follow from it."

Moreover, he highlighted France's sincere and loyal support for Morocco, pointing out the clarity of the stance expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron in a letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the Throne Day, dated July 30, 2024. In this correspondence, President Macron officially stated that he views the present and future of Western Sahara within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.

This meeting marked the 15th session of the high-level Moroccan-French discussions, reinforcing the exceptional partnership that unites Morocco and France, led by the two nations' leaders, His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Emmanuel Macron.
