Frederik Ruppert Shatters European Record in 3000m Steeplechase, Eyes Gold at European Championships

Frederik Ruppert's dedication and ambition have culminated in a remarkable achievement, as he has officially broken the European record in the 3000-meter steeplechase. At the Diamond League meeting held in Rabat, the 29-year-old athlete from LAV Stadtwerke Tübingen clocked an impressive time of 7:57.80 minutes, becoming the first European to finish the race in under eight minutes. This groundbreaking performance surpassed the previous record held by Frenchman Mahiedine Mekhissi, which stood at 8:00.09 minutes since 2013. In a thrilling contest, the victory went to Moroccan runner Soufiane El Bakkali, who finished just ahead of Ruppert with a time of 7:57.25 minutes.

Ruppert expressed his disbelief at his historic achievement, stating, "It’s simply unbelievable to be the first European to break the eight-minute barrier." His rigorous training regimen is well-known, and he reflected on the dedication it took to reach this milestone: "I trained all winter with this singular goal in mind and didn't miss a single training day. Therefore, it feels amazing to see all that hard work finally pay off." Only eleven athletes worldwide have completed the steeplechase faster than Ruppert, with the world record held by Ethiopian Lamecha Girma at 7:52.11 minutes.

The red-haired runner, who trains under the guidance of Isabelle Baumann in Tübingen, had already shown significant improvement last year in Morocco, shaving more than 13 seconds off his previous best with a time of 8:01.49 minutes, which had set a German record. Later that year, he became the first German athlete to win the Diamond League final in Zurich, and this year he has further improved his performance.

"Rabat is an emotional place for me," Ruppert shared after his race. "The competition this year was even faster, although I approached it similarly to last year’s race." He initially maintained a cautious pace but gradually caught up to the leading trio, which was spearheaded by local favorite El Bakkali.

Reflecting on the race, Ruppert admitted, "After the first 600 meters, I began to doubt myself and felt somewhat rusty. But then things just started to flow." He characterized the latter stages of the race as a "sprint finish," allowing him to overtake two Kenyan runners, Simon Koech (7:59.44) and Edmund Serem (8:01.61), in the final lap.

With this remarkable performance, Ruppert has emerged as one of the primary gold medal hopefuls for the European Championships scheduled from August 10 to 16 in Birmingham. "I am really looking forward to the European Championships," he said, adding, "Everything beyond that I see as a pure bonus."
