French Farmers Rally Against Moroccan Cherry Tomato Imports Amid Price Wars

French Farmers Face Off Against Moroccan Tomato Imports

The summer sales of cherry tomatoes are soaring, yet French producers are expressing their outrage. The influx of affordable tomatoes from Morocco has led local farmers to claim that they are facing unfair competition, prompting demands for a reassessment of existing trade agreements. This price war is playing out directly in supermarket aisles, where a 250-gram pack of Moroccan tomatoes is sold year-round at just 99 cents. In contrast, a new 'sovereign' French alternative, launched with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, cannot be priced lower than €1.29. This significant price gap can be attributed to the drastic differences in labor costs.

According to Pierre-Yves Jestin, the head of the Savéol cooperative and president of an association representing 500 French producers, the situation is dire. He states, "Currently, the hourly wage in France is around €15. In comparison, labor costs in Morocco are about €1 per hour, and labor is the primary expense in producing cherry tomatoes." This formidable competitiveness enables Moroccan farmers to flood the European market, with an astonishing 275,000 tonnes shipped in 2025 alone. These volumes are bolstered by a reduction in customs duties approved by the European Union in 2012. French professionals are now calling for an immediate overhaul of this treaty, as reported by bladi.net.

Urgent Call for Trade Agreement Revisions

This agreement, originally designed to secure the supply of conventional tomatoes during the winter months, is now deemed outdated and irrelevant to current market conditions. The stakes are incredibly high for France, where consumption of cherry tomatoes has been on a steady rise since 2019, hitting a remarkable 115,000 tonnes consumed last year. The French agricultural sector is now in a precarious position, as it grapples with the implications of foreign competition that is significantly undermining their market share.
