French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne Heads to Morocco

French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, accompanied by around 12 ministers including Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, is set to visit Morocco's capital city, Rabat, next Wednesday and Thursday. This visit marks Borne's first official trip abroad since assuming office. The meeting with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch comes amidst a backdrop of excellent diplomatic relations between the two nations, particularly following President Emmanuel Macron's acknowledgment of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in the summer of 2024 and the resumption of security cooperation between the two countries.

As detailed by the French Prime Minister's office, Akhannouch and several members of his cabinet will officially welcome Borne and her delegation at the airport on the evening of July 15. The visit will include a series of high-level meetings and discussions, further solidifying the ties between France and Morocco.

Agenda and Significance of the Visit

During the visit, Borne is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Akhannouch the following morning, followed by a press conference around midday. Additionally, the agenda for Thursday includes a high-level meeting between the French and Moroccan delegations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with a ceremonial laying of a wreath at the tomb of the late King Mohammed V. The visit is scheduled to conclude with an official lunch prior to their departure in the afternoon.

The diplomatic relations between France and Morocco have reached an impressive level since President Macron's recognition of Morocco's claims over the disputed Western Sahara region. This acknowledgment has led to a significant renewal of security cooperation between the two nations, highlighting the importance of this visit in further strengthening bilateral ties.
