French Prime Minister's Visit to Morocco

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to visit Morocco on July 15th and 16th, marking a significant state visit aimed at further solidifying the ties between Paris and Rabat. This will be Lecornu's first foreign trip since taking office in the autumn of 2025, and it comes at a time when both nations are eager to rejuvenate their bilateral relations and expand their cooperative efforts across various sectors.

Accompanied by a delegation of twelve government officials, including Jean-Noël Barrot, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and Laurent Nuñez, the Minister of the Interior, Lecornu will partake in high-level discussions with Moroccan officials. He is set to meet with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, a notable engagement as it marks the first meeting of its kind since 2019.

Reviving Diplomatic Dialogue

This meeting is pivotal, representing a renewal of institutional dialogue after a period of diplomatic tensions characterized by several disputes, including visa restrictions and allegations of espionage. However, relations between France and Morocco have seen a resurgence since President Emmanuel Macron's endorsement of Morocco's position on the Sahara issue in 2024. This endorsement paved the way for Macron's official visit to Rabat in October 2024, during which several economic agreements and partnerships were established.

Observers suggest that this upcoming visit aims to transform the political rapprochement into actionable cooperation projects focusing on economic, security, and diplomatic sectors. Both countries share mutual interests in combating terrorism and ensuring regional stability, particularly in the Sahel region. Security discussions are expected to be a priority, with Laurent Nuñez set to discuss pertinent issues with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit, particularly concerning the case of Ismaël Benahmed, a Franco-Moroccan national who was arrested in Morocco and is being sought by French authorities in connection with a murder case dating back to 2019.
