Friouato Cave, one of the oldest and deepest caves in Morocco and Africa, is poised to welcome visitors once again after years of closure due to a tragic incident. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of the city of Taza, the cave is scheduled for a formal inauguration on Monday, July 27, 2026. This reopening comes after extensive safety renovations and security measures were completed, ensuring a safe environment for tourists and explorers alike.
According to reliable sources from the regional agency for project implementation (AREP), which is overseen by the Fez-Meknes Regional Council, the restoration and reinforcement works at Friouato Cave have been finalized within the designated timelines. Over the years, more than 12 million dirhams have been allocated to secure the Friouato site, which reaches a depth of 130 meters. The efforts aim to enhance mountain and caving tourism while safeguarding visitors from potential rock falls that led to its previous closure.
