Germany Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Autonomy Initiative at Strategic Dialogue

Germany's Commitment to Moroccan Autonomy Initiative

In a significant development during the second session of the Morocco-Germany Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue, held on Thursday in Rabat, the Federal Republic of Germany reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco's autonomy initiative regarding the ongoing regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This stance was articulated in a joint declaration issued at the conclusion of the meeting, which featured discussions between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his German counterpart, Mr. Johann Wadephul. This dialogue emphasizes Germany's recognition of the necessity for a viable solution that respects Moroccan sovereignty.

Germany expressed its endorsement of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, which emphasized that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent the most feasible solution" to the contentious issue. The German government reiterated its acknowledgment of the Autonomy Initiative proposed by Morocco, labeling it as "a serious and credible basis for negotiations" aimed at achieving a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable resolution to the regional conflict. Furthermore, the joint declaration highlighted Germany's full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations grounded in the Moroccan autonomy plan.

In a notable gesture of commitment, the declaration also reflected Germany's readiness to align its diplomatic and economic actions with this supportive stance, adhering to the principles of international law. This collaboration underscores a significant diplomatic relationship and the shared objective of fostering stability and resolution in the region.
