GITEX Africa 2026: Pioneering Sustainable Development Through Digital Innovation

Overview of GITEX Africa 2026

Marrakech is set to host the fourth edition of GITEX Africa from April 7 to 9, 2026, further solidifying Morocco's position as a pivotal technological and innovative hub within the African continent. This event serves as the African extension of GITEX GLOBAL, an annual showcase held at the Dubai World Trade Center, and is organized by the Digital Development Agency (ADD) in partnership with KAOUN International. The 2026 theme, "Catalyzing Africa’s Digital Economy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," emphasizes the crucial role of AI as a technological catalyst while aiming to establish a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable digital economy across Africa.

Driving Change Through AI and Sustainability

Organizers of GITEX Africa highlight that digital innovation, particularly artificial intelligence, holds significant potential for advancing sustainable development. By enhancing infrastructure, informing public policy, and accelerating the adoption of impactful digital technologies tailored to Africa's unique landscape, GITEX Africa emerges as a strategic framework for collaboration. Amine El Mezouaghi, Director General of the Digital Development Agency, asserts that the event aims to unite African and international stakeholders around practical solutions that align with local realities while fostering high-impact digital projects that strengthen regional capabilities sustainably. As climate change continues to pose increasing challenges, GITEX Africa presents a timely opportunity for stakeholders to explore technological innovations that address a spectrum of economic and environmental issues facing the continent.

The expo will showcase advancements in climate technology, sustainable agriculture, smart city solutions, and energy-efficient digital infrastructure—all of which fall under the umbrella of greentech. This sector of the global technology industry is dedicated to minimizing environmental impacts while promoting economic growth. Across the African continent, greentech is gaining recognition as a burgeoning industry that not only addresses sustainability but also propels economic development. With its vast renewable energy resources, Africa is poised to become a key player in the greentech arena, especially amid rising energy demands and climate-related challenges.

Renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Africa's greentech ecosystem, with numerous large-scale projects reflecting a surge of investment in clean energy solutions. North Africa, in particular, has witnessed accelerated growth as both governments and global corporations seek sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. Additionally, the potential for green hydrogen production, generated from renewable electricity, positions parts of Africa as prospective suppliers of clean energy, leveraging the region's abundant solar and wind resources.

Morocco has emerged as a frontrunner in the green and digital technology innovation landscape within Africa. According to the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025, Morocco ranks among the top startup ecosystems on the continent, attracting attention for sustainable initiatives. The nation's innovation centers and research institutions play a vital role in nurturing greentech startups. For instance, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) routinely collaborates with international organizations to empower entrepreneurs developing greentech and agritech solutions, tackling pressing environmental and technological challenges in Africa.

Furthermore, GITEX Africa aligns with the Digital for Sustainable Development Hub (D4SD), an initiative launched by Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme. This initiative aims to foster digital cooperation across Africa and the Arab region while ensuring that digital innovation positively impacts sustainable development and enhances living standards. Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, emphasized that through D4SD, the goal is to create an Arab-African digital cooperation platform, facilitating expertise sharing, skill development, and the implementation of AI solutions tailored to the development priorities of their nations.

As GITEX Africa 2026 approaches, it promises to be a convergence of innovative minds, bringing together policymakers, climate tech investors, chief sustainability officers, and researchers. The GITEX Africa Impact Summit has previously attracted leading thinkers dedicated to leveraging technology to improve environmental outcomes. This year, alongside valuable programming, sustainability initiatives, and projects from around the globe will be showcased, fostering a collaborative environment that propels the greentech sector forward. Noteworthy participants include Abajad ia, a B2B data intelligence platform for Morocco and Francophone Africa, and 42Gears Mobility Systems (UK) Ltd, specializing in enterprise mobility management. Additionally, the Dutch climate tech firm 0Plastic B.V. is making strides by converting plastic waste into clean fuel through innovative decentralized magnetic induction heating systems.
