Introduction of the GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo Ferries
GNV, the ferry division of the MSC Group, is set to enhance its maritime services with the introduction of two state-of-the-art vessels, the GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo, on the Genoa-Barcelona-Tanger Med route starting summer 2026. The GNV Aurora will officially enter service on June 1, while the GNV Virgo will follow suit on July 1. These vessels are among the most advanced in the Mediterranean, particularly in terms of environmental sustainability, reflecting GNV's commitment to modern technology, comfort, efficiency, and eco-friendly practices.
The execution of this operational launch has been made possible through collaboration with Moroccan authorities and the management of the Tanger Med port, acknowledging the increasing significance of Tanger Med as a key logistics hub in the Mediterranean. This partnership underscores the robust relationship that GNV has cultivated with Morocco over the years, characterized by ongoing technical and institutional dialogue aimed at enhancing maritime connections between Europe and North Africa.
Morocco: A Strategic Long-Term Partner
Morocco is a pivotal market for GNV's operations, as the company has been serving this region for over 15 years, viewing its presence as a long-term commitment. Matteo Catani, CEO of GNV, emphasizes that Morocco is a strategic partner for the company, particularly in light of its rapid growth and increasing prominence on the international stage, exemplified by its role as a co-host for the FIFA World Cup 2030 alongside Spain, another of GNV's primary markets. GNV aims to be an active contributor to this development process, enhancing connections across the Mediterranean and supporting the trade flows that accompany this growth.
To oversee operations on the ground, Carole Montarsolo has been appointed as the new General Manager of GNV Morocco, working closely with Mohammed Kabbaj, a long-standing partner of GNV in the region. This leadership structure reinforces GNV's commitment to strengthening its local presence and operational efficiency.
The GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo are leading examples of environmental sustainability in the Mediterranean maritime industry. Both ferries are powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), allowing for a reduction of CO₂ emissions by up to 50% per cargo unit compared to older vessels. Furthermore, the GNV Aurora features cold ironing technology, which connects the ship to the shore power grid during port stays, shutting down its generators and eliminating direct emissions of CO₂, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides in the port area. This initiative significantly benefits air quality and the communities residing near ports.
With a gross tonnage of approximately 53,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, a width of 29.60 meters, and a maximum cruising speed of 25 knots, the GNV Aurora can accommodate over 1,700 passengers across 426 cabins and transport up to 2,780 linear meters of cargo. The GNV Virgo shares these technical specifications, providing equivalent capacity and service standards.
The introduction of these new vessels is part of a broader strategy to develop logistical, economic, and infrastructure capabilities in Morocco, further accelerated by investments related to hosting the FIFA World Cup 2030. In this evolving landscape, the maritime connection between the two shores of the Mediterranean gains increasing strategic importance, with GNV positioned as a crucial infrastructure for facilitating the movement of people and goods, alongside fostering economic growth throughout this corridor.
On June 1, an official christening ceremony for the GNV Aurora will take place in Tanger, attended by dignitaries, partners, institutions, customers, and both Moroccan and international media. This event will serve to strengthen and affirm the bond between GNV and the Western Mediterranean.
