The Italian company GNV has announced, from the city of Tetouan, the introduction of a new ferry powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to transport passengers across the Mediterranean. This initiative is part of the company's strategy to strengthen its presence and operations in Morocco.
The modern vessel, named GNV AURORA, will operate three weekly trips between the port of Genoa and the port of Tangier Med, making stops in France and Spain. This launch coincides with Morocco's preparations for the "Marhaba 2026" operation, which aims to facilitate travel during the peak summer months.
Matteo Catani, the General Director of GNV, shared insights during a press conference, stating that the GNV AURORA is the second ship of its kind for the company, utilizing LNG, the cleanest fuel currently available in the market. He highlighted that this initiative connects Morocco with Spain, Italy, and France, emphasizing the environmental benefits of using LNG, which significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions and greenhouse gases. This aligns with the company's commitment to transitioning towards more environmentally friendly vessels.
According to Catani, this new venture represents an opportunity to enhance the partnership with Morocco, which is making strides in developing hydrogen energy. He noted that the ultimate goal is to transition to synthetic fuels that are both eco-friendly and sustainable, making this the first sustainable maritime corridor that fosters technological advancement for the future.
He emphasized that GNV chose Morocco because of its long-term strategic vision and significant ambitions in economic and social development, as well as its modernization of port infrastructures, airports, roads, and air transport, particularly in light of the upcoming World Cup in 2030. Catani expressed the company’s eagerness to contribute to Morocco’s rapid progress, stating, "We are playing our part in the maritime sector by dedicating the latest and most advanced ships to connect Morocco with Europe, in collaboration with our partners, especially the Ministry of Transport and the Tangier Med port."
Mohamed El Qabbaj, GNV's partner in Morocco, echoed these sentiments, stating that the Italian company has matured significantly due to the vision of the Moroccan monarchy regarding the country's maritime future. He noted that GNV has embraced this philosophy and vision, which has led to remarkable success.
He further stated that Morocco stands to gain immensely from this initiative, as it is markedly ahead of neighboring countries. The company is committed to supporting the Moroccan diaspora through reliable maritime transport services. The source also highlighted that GNV has allocated two of its four new vessels exclusively for Morocco, both equipped with cutting-edge technology for the Moroccan community's transportation needs.
El Qabbaj pointed out that the company does not fear competition; rather, it views it as a means to enhance its quality, seriousness, and reliability. He expressed a desire for GNV to act as a catalyst in attracting competitors and encouraging them to invest in Morocco, aligning with the royal vision.
Carole Montarsolo, the General Director of GNV in Morocco, noted that the company is entering a new phase that significantly enhances the travel experience for customers in terms of comfort, security, and services for families, tourists, and professionals. She mentioned that the new ferry emphasizes the "Made in Morocco" branding through its Moroccan crew and onboard restaurants and shops showcasing Moroccan handicrafts, allowing travelers to taste and purchase Moroccan products before arriving in the country.
Montarsolo expressed optimism for the future, indicating that there has been a high volume of bookings for the ferry, which underscores the commitment to providing quality and exceptional travel experiences. The new vessel introduces various travel classes, including family cabins, while striving to keep prices competitive with previous rates. Additionally, premium cabins are available at higher prices, and a loyalty program is in place to reward frequent travelers with discounts and special privileges.
