GNV Strengthens Moroccan Services with New LNG-Fueled Vessels

GNV AURORA and GNV VIRGO: A New Era for Ferry Services in Morocco

FerryGNV has taken a significant step in enhancing its maritime operations by deploying its latest vessels, the GNV AURORA and GNV VIRGO, specifically for its services in Morocco. This strategic decision underscores the increasing importance of the North African market within the company's expansive network. The GNV AURORA was officially inaugurated on June 3rd in Tangier, in a grand ceremony attended by over 500 dignitaries, including Morocco's transport minister Abdessamad Kayouh, along with GNV's chairman Pierfrancesco Vago and CEO Matteo Catani. The introduction of these vessels is set to revolutionize the ferry industry in the region.

Both vessels are set to commence operations on crucial maritime routes: GNV AURORA entered service on June 1st, followed by GNV VIRGO on July 1st. They will operate between the ports of Tanger Med, Barcelona, and Genoa, with Barcelona serving as a vital transit hub within the Morocco-Spain-Italy shipping network. Genoa is designated as the primary LNG bunkering port, allowing the vessels to refuel every four to five days, thus ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability.

Preparing for a Busy Summer Season

The deployment of these LNG-fueled vessels comes in preparation for the bustling 2026 summer season, coinciding with the annual Marhaba operation, which facilitates travel for over three million Moroccan citizens between Europe and Morocco from June through mid-September. In 2025 alone, GNV successfully transported more than 465,000 passengers on its Moroccan routes, contributing to a remarkable total of nearly six million travelers over almost twenty years of dedicated service to this market.

The GNV AURORA, the second LNG-fueled vessel in GNV's fleet, is part of an ambitious fleet renewal initiative worth EUR 1.3 billion, slated to continue through 2030. This vessel, measuring approximately 53,000 GT and 218 meters in length, is designed to accommodate over 1,700 passengers in 426 cabins and boasts a cargo capacity of 2,780 lane meters. Notably, the incorporation of LNG propulsion technology and efficiency improvements allows for a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 50% per transport unit compared to earlier generations, aligning with IMO Tier III standards and featuring cold ironing capabilities.

As part of this ongoing modernization effort, GNV plans to introduce four additional vessels every six months starting in 2027. These new ships will be larger, measuring 237 meters and 71,300 GT, with an increased capacity for 2,500 passengers and 3,500 lane meters across 500 cabins, further enhancing GNV's service capabilities in the competitive ferry market.
