Mauritania and Morocco Strengthen Security Cooperation Against Smuggling and Illegal Migration

Enhanced Security Collaboration Between Mauritania and Morocco

On July 19, 2026, representatives from Mauritania and Morocco convened in Rabat to discuss the development of security cooperation aimed at addressing border security challenges, curbing irregular migration, and combating organized crime. The meeting saw the participation of the interior ministers from both nations, highlighting the importance of collaboration in a region facing significant security threats.

During the discussions, Moroccan Interior Minister Abdel Wahid Lfti welcomed his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed Amin. The agenda focused on mechanisms to enhance cooperation between the two ministries in both security and administrative fields. Special emphasis was placed on coordinating efforts to protect borders and counteract smuggling networks and organized crime syndicates.

The Mauritanian Interior Ministry released a statement via its official Facebook page, indicating that the talks were centered on fostering a participatory dynamic between the two ministries. The discussions also aimed to bolster cooperation among central institutions and local authorities in both countries.

Moreover, the two ministers deliberated on various matters, including strategies to combat irregular migration and human trafficking, as well as enhancing administrative and decentralized cooperation between Mauritania and Morocco. The Mauritanian Interior Minister, upon his arrival in Rabat, was invited by Minister Abdel Wahid Lfti for a visit of unspecified duration, which underscores the growing ties between Nouakchott and Rabat in matters of border security and counter-smuggling efforts.

The Mauritanian Interior Ministry has emphasized that this visit is part of the increasing coordination between the two capitals regarding border security and the fight against smuggling networks, particularly in light of the challenges facing the Sahel region. The cooperation aims to support regional stability and improve security coordination, while also fostering trade exchanges between Mauritania and Morocco.

Despite some regional differences, particularly regarding the disputed Western Sahara territory involving Morocco and the Polisario Front, the relationship between Mauritania and Morocco remains strong. Nouakchott maintains a neutral stance on the Sahara issue, advocating for peaceful solutions to prevent escalating tensions, while Rabat seeks to grant the region autonomy under its sovereignty. In contrast, the Polisario Front calls for a referendum on self-determination, a position supported by Algeria, which harbors refugees from the region.
