Rising Temperatures Forecasted in Morocco

The General Directorate of Meteorology in Morocco has announced that hot weather is expected to persist across the country, with temperatures potentially reaching as high as 46 degrees Celsius in certain areas in the coming days. However, it is important to note that this increase does not necessarily indicate the return of a widespread heatwave. According to Hussein Youbad, the communication officer at the meteorological agency, the hot and relatively hot conditions are likely to continue, particularly affecting inland regions, the eastern region, the southeast, and parts of the southern provinces, with local temperature spikes exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Youbad elaborated that maximum temperatures are anticipated to range between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius in the southeast and eastern regions, as well as in the eastern and southern provinces. Conversely, temperatures are expected to be milder, ranging from 24 to 28 degrees Celsius in the Atlas Mountains and near coastal areas. Meanwhile, temperatures across the Saïs region, the Moulouya Valley, the phosphate plateaus, Oulmès, the Tadla plains, and the Rahamna region are projected to fluctuate between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius. The rest of the regions will likely see temperatures ranging from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Weather Patterns and Their Implications

The meteorological forecasts indicate that these hot conditions are expected to persist over the next few days, with a gradual increase in temperatures anticipated by mid-next week in various parts of the kingdom. While temperatures will remain relatively high in the southeast and within the southern provinces, the situation is primarily attributed to the ongoing influence of the desert thermal low, which is pushing warm air masses from the desert regions toward the south and east of the country, thereby raising temperatures in the internal areas.

Moreover, Youbad mentioned that the upper atmospheric layers are experiencing relatively cooler air, contributing to a state of atmospheric instability, particularly in elevated regions. He emphasized that this scenario explains the concurrent rise in temperatures alongside the possibility of localized thunderstorms forming over the Rif, Atlas, eastern, and southeastern regions, especially during the afternoon hours.

In conclusion, Youbad clarified that this increase in temperatures does not signify the imminent return of a nationwide heatwave but rather reflects a natural fluctuation in weather patterns towards the end of summer. It is expected that higher temperatures will continue to prevail in the interior and southern regions, while other areas will gradually trend towards more moderate temperatures.
