Starting from Tuesday, July 14th, a significant heat wave is expected to affect vast regions of Morocco, lasting until the end of the current week. This prompted the General Directorate of Meteorology to issue an orange-level alert, forecasting temperatures that could reach up to 45 degrees Celsius in several areas, particularly in the southeastern region and the desert.
According to Hussein Youabed, the communication officer at the General Directorate of Meteorology, this heat wave is a result of the extension of a desert thermal low towards northern Morocco. This phenomenon leads to the influx of hot and dry air masses coming from the desert, with easterly and southeasterly winds intensifying the feeling of heat. Locally, this weather pattern is referred to as "Sharki".
The provinces of Zagora, Tata, Smara, Assa-Zag, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Awsard are expected to be among the most affected, with temperatures projected to range between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius. Other regions, including Marrakech, Beni Mellal, Errachidia, Taroudant, Oujda, Khouribga, Settat, and Tinghir, will likely experience temperatures between 40 and 43 degrees Celsius.
Youabed confirmed that heat waves during July generally fall within the typical climatic characteristics of this season, known for being one of the hottest months of the year. However, certain areas may witness temperatures exceeding seasonal averages, necessitating the issuance of alerts to take appropriate precautions.
The Directorate warns that elderly individuals, children (especially infants), those with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers are the most vulnerable to the risks associated with this heat wave. They advise people to increase their water intake, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, wear light clothing, and never leave children or the elderly inside closed vehicles.
The communication officer also highlighted that climate change has contributed to the rise in average temperatures and the increased frequency of heat waves in recent years. Nonetheless, the current situation is also linked to natural weather factors, primarily the extension of the desert thermal low, reflecting an interplay between seasonal weather fluctuations and the broader trend of global warming.
Furthermore, the Directorate continues to monitor the evolving weather situation as part of a national vigilance system, ensuring that alert bulletins are disseminated to local authorities and relevant sectors. This proactive approach aims to enhance preparedness among various stakeholders to protect citizens.
