Strengthening Security Ties: Morocco and Spain's Joint Anti-Terrorism Efforts
Since 2014, Morocco and Spain have established a robust framework for anti-terrorism cooperation, which has resulted in over 30 joint operations and approximately 150 arrests linked to terrorist activities. This collaborative effort underscores a strategic alliance characterized by mutual trust and the continuous exchange of intelligence, aimed at neutralizing significant threats to national security in both countries.
The Spanish National Police has publicly acknowledged the exceptional relationship it shares with Morocco's General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST). Following a recent joint anti-terrorism operation, they reiterated that this partnership serves as a fundamental pillar in their united front against terrorism. The collaborative framework has proven vital in dismantling threats that could jeopardize public safety.
A landmark event in this cooperation was the operation named "Azteca," conducted on March 14, 2014. This operation led to the dismantling of one of the most prominent networks engaged in the recruitment and dispatch of combatants to conflict zones such as Syria and the Sahel region. Through this operation, authorities apprehended eight individuals of various nationalities, marking a significant achievement in their ongoing battle against extremism.
Moreover, since the inception of this partnership, Rabat and Madrid have jointly executed more than twenty significant operations aimed at combating terrorism. These efforts have been complemented by extensive measures to ensure security within both nations, particularly targeting drug trafficking and organized crime networks. The daily endeavors of mixed commissions overseeing various agreements have further enhanced the effectiveness of their collaborative efforts.
