In a groundbreaking event, seventy-five golf enthusiasts gathered at the prestigious Al Houara Golf Club in Tangier, Morocco, for the inaugural national tournament hosted by the Spanish Association of Senior Golfers (AESGOLF) outside of Spain in its 65-year history. This significant occasion not only marks the introduction of a Moroccan course into the AESGOLF calendar but also highlights the growing appeal of Morocco as a premier golfing destination.
The Al Houara Golf Club, co-designed by celebrated Masters Tournament champion Vijay Singh and renowned golf architect Graham Marsh, is recognized among the top 100 golf courses globally according to Golf.com. This world-class venue offers an exceptional golfing experience that is poised to attract players from across the Mediterranean region.
Filiberto Cano, president of AESGOLF, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, "It was a major challenge for us. At AESGOLF, we strive to innovate, and this national ranking event has been a resounding success. The vast majority of participating players are eager to return for future tournaments." He emphasized the convenience of traveling to Morocco from Spain, noting that it is just a short one-hour flight away. Cano further elaborated on the appeal of Morocco, highlighting four essential factors: proximity, affordability, high-quality courses, and a favorable climate. Coupled with the warm hospitality of the Moroccan people, it presents a compelling option for Spanish golfers seeking new challenges.
The tournament crowned Julián García Mayoral as its Scratch champion, who completed the two rounds with a gross score of 149 (75 and 74). This was García Mayoral's first experience on the Al Houara course, and he could not have been more pleased with the conditions. "The course was in perfect shape; the bunkers and water hazards were well-balanced, the greens were large yet fast and undulating, and the scenic views throughout the course were breathtaking. We also had the opportunity to explore the city, and I was truly impressed," he remarked. His performance was particularly commendable as he managed to overcome Juan Martínez Campos, who was leading after the first round.
With this successful tournament, AESGOLF has firmly established Morocco as a regular fixture in its future events. Participants unanimously agreed on the burgeoning golf scene in Morocco, which spans from the Mediterranean coastline to the arid desert, and from the majestic Atlas Mountains to the beautiful Atlantic beaches. The rich culture and tradition intertwined with the sport, which was introduced in Morocco in the early 20th century through the Royal Country Club in Tangier—one of Africa’s oldest courses—further enhances the allure of golfing in this vibrant country.
