Historic FIFA Ranking for Morocco as Algeria Falls Behind

In an exciting turn of events influenced by the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco has achieved its highest-ever FIFA ranking, while Algeria experiences a significant drop. The World Cup has reshaped the FIFA rankings, with Morocco climbing closer to the coveted Top 5 in the world. Their journey began with a commendable draw against Brazil (1-1) in their opening match of the tournament, and despite this, Morocco continues to ascend the ranks. Recently, they surpassed the Netherlands, aided by Algeria's unexpected victory over the Dutch (1-0) in a friendly match on June 3. Furthermore, the Moroccan team has now benefited from Portugal's misstep, as the Portuguese team was held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their first match, allowing Morocco to claim the sixth position in the FIFA rankings.

This marks a historic achievement for the Moroccan national team. Led by star player Achraf Hakimi, they are now inching closer to breaking the African record held by Nigeria, which reached the 5th spot in the world back in April 1994. Morocco proudly maintains its status as the number one team in Africa, with Senegal trailing at 16th globally, followed by Nigeria at 25th, Egypt at 29th, and Ivory Coast at 30th.

Algeria Exits the African Top 5

On the other hand, Algeria has slipped out of the Top 5 in the African rankings. The national team, known as the Fennecs, suffered a heavy defeat against Argentina (3-0), which, coupled with Ivory Coast's victory over Ecuador (1-0), has pushed the team down to 31st place globally and 6th in Africa. The team, under coach Vladimir Petkovic, urgently needs to regroup and perform well in their upcoming matches against Jordan and Austria if they wish to keep their hopes alive in the ongoing competition. The next critical matches are set to take place on Tuesday, June 23, at 5 AM.
