Historic Launch: Air Transat and WestJet Introduce New Routes Connecting Canada to Morocco, Iceland, and Senegal

The Dawn of a New Era in Canadian Aviation

On June 12, 2026, Canadian aviation witnessed a landmark day with the launch of several groundbreaking routes, marking a significant expansion in transatlantic travel. Air Transat and WestJet together inaugurated three new direct flights, each unprecedented in its own right. This momentous day features Air Transat's inaugural flight from Montreal to Agadir, Morocco, which stands as the very first direct link between North America and the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Concurrently, WestJet is launching its Toronto to Ponta Delgada service in the Azores, adding to the growing connectivity in the region. Following closely, Air Transat will also reintroduce the direct Montreal–Reykjavik route on June 16, and the highly anticipated Montreal–Dakar service will commence on June 17, making it the first nonstop flight connecting Canada to Sub-Saharan Africa.

Breaking Barriers: A Closer Look at the Montreal–Agadir Route

The launch of the Montreal–Agadir route is transformative, addressing a longstanding gap in air connectivity for Canadian travelers seeking direct access to Morocco's beautiful Atlantic coastline. Previously, tourists faced lengthy travel times of 12 to 14 hours, typically involving connections through European hubs like Casablanca or Madrid. Air Transat's new service, featuring a swift 7-hour and 15-minute nonstop flight aboard the Airbus A321LR, offers a more efficient travel option. Passengers can enjoy a seamless journey from Montreal to Agadir, arriving just in time for the weekend.

The route's importance was underscored at a celebratory launch event in Montreal, attended by travel industry professionals and Moroccan officials, including Souriya Otmani, Morocco’s Ambassador to Canada. This new service is expected to enhance tourism and cultural exchanges between the two nations. With Canadian visitor arrivals to Morocco surging by 29% year-on-year, the demand for direct flights is evident.

Agadir itself presents a compelling alternative to Morocco's more traditional destinations like Marrakech. Known for its stunning beaches and year-round warm climate, Agadir is a haven for sun-seekers. The surrounding Souss-Massa region offers diverse experiences, from the peaks of the High Atlas mountains to the picturesque Paradise Valley, making it an attractive option for Canadian travelers looking for a unique holiday experience.

Moreover, Air Transat's expansion does not stop with Agadir. On June 16, the airline will restore direct competition with its Montreal–Reykjavik route, catering to the growing interest in Iceland as a travel destination. The following day, June 17, will see the launch of the Montreal–Dakar route, which will be Canada’s first nonstop service to Sub-Saharan Africa. This route is particularly significant for the Senegalese diaspora in Quebec, offering them a direct connection to their homeland.
