A Disturbing Incident Before International Women's Day
As International Women's Day approaches on March 8, Samira Qasmi, a member of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights in the region of Sefrou, has reported a distressing incident where her residence was attacked by a group of minors. These children allegedly shouted the word "kafir" (infidel) at her during the assault. This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and rights of individuals advocating for human rights, especially in the context of women's rights.
Condemnation and Calls for Accountability
The human rights branch in Taza has condemned this behavior, stating that the phrase used by the minors reflects a systematic incitement against Qasmi. They decried not only the actions of the children but also the entities that may be instigating such hostile behavior. Qasmi, who previously faced arrest in connection with her social media posts in 2024, expressed her distress in a Facebook post on March 6, detailing how she endured multiple attacks from the group. The minors violently attempted to break the glass door of her workplace, which also serves as her home, while yelling derogatory terms at her.
In her post, she emphasized the repeated nature of these attacks, noting that each time she attempted to confront the assailants, they fled the scene. Qasmi described the experience as both alarming and painful, raising poignant questions about her status as a citizen in her own country. She queried, "Are we truly citizens in this country, or are we less than refugees? Who has incited these minors to engage in such barbaric and aggressive behavior? Who bears the responsibility for instilling hatred in the minds of children?" This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by human rights advocates in Morocco and the urgent need for societal reflection and accountability.
