Germany's National Team Gears Up for the World Cup
As the German national football team convenes for their final training session ahead of the World Cup, two prominent figures from the 2014 championship-winning squad, Mats Hummels and Thomas Müller, are already looking forward to the summer tournament. Both players express a strong belief in the capabilities of the DFB team, led by coach Julian Nagelsmann, to perform significantly better than in the past two World Cups.
Hummels, in particular, is confident that the team's performance will markedly improve, stating, “What we experienced in 2018 and 2022, with an early exit after the group stage, will not happen this time.” He expects a smooth progression through the tournament, emphasizing the favorable group stage draw that includes matches against Curacao, Ecuador, and the Ivory Coast. “I expect the German national team not only to win all three games but also to be the clearly superior team,” added Hummels, who will serve as an analyst for the streaming service MagentaTV during the tournament held across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
However, Hummels insists that a successful group stage is merely the beginning of their aspirations. He acknowledges that Spain is a formidable opponent, stating, “Spain is above all, but there are seven, eight, or nine teams that realistically can become world champions. We are one of them,” he asserts confidently, reflecting the high expectations set for the team.
Müller Joins the Optimistic Outlook
Thomas Müller echoes Hummels' sentiments, recognizing Germany as one of the leading contenders in the tournament. The Vancouver Whitecaps forward acknowledges the team's inconsistency over the past few years, saying, “Logically, I miss the consistency we had in previous years.” However, he also highlights the glimpses of excellence displayed not only during the last European Championship but also in individual qualifying matches. Like Hummels, Müller will also take on the role of a television analyst next summer, alongside Jürgen Klopp, further showcasing the wealth of experience and insight from former champions.
