Hyundai Motor's Electric Bus Initiative in Marrakech
Hyundai Motor has made a significant stride in promoting sustainable transportation by supplying South Korean-manufactured electric buses to Marrakech, Morocco, for the first time, as part of an Official Development Assistance (ODA) initiative. This comprehensive project not only encompasses the delivery of 15 Elec City electric buses but also includes essential charging infrastructure and local training programs aimed at enhancing operational and maintenance capabilities. The overarching goal is to electrify public transit in Marrakech's key tourist areas, thereby fostering a greener commercial mobility landscape throughout North Africa.
Supporting Sustainable Urban Mobility
On September 22, Hyundai Motor announced its collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to equip Marrakech with these eco-friendly vehicles. A domestic handover ceremony was held at Hyundai’s Jeonju plant, attended by notable figures, including Lee Seung-min, Executive Director of Hyundai's Commercial Product Division; Do Young-ah, Director of KOICA’s Regional Project Division 2; and Chafik Rachadi, the Moroccan Ambassador to South Korea. This project, part of a larger ODA effort, aims to create an eco-friendly electric bus system, which includes the provision of fast chargers and technical training for local staff to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of these electric buses.
The deployment of these Elec City buses is expected to significantly enhance public transportation options for both tourists and local residents while simultaneously reducing urban air pollution and lowering carbon emissions. Hyundai plans to complete the production and delivery of all units by the first quarter of 2027, marking a pivotal moment in Morocco's transition to sustainable public transit, aligning with the nation's policy goals of achieving a 45.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.
