Closure of Casablanca Restaurant's Historic Location
The iconic Casablanca restaurant, a staple in the culinary landscape of Perpignan, has officially closed its doors at its historic location on Boulevard John F. Kennedy after an impressive 36 years of service. This beloved establishment, renowned for its exquisite Moroccan cuisine, has made a significant impact on both local diners and the broader community throughout its years of operation. However, the closure does not signal the end for the restaurant, as it will continue to serve its loyal patrons at its second location established in 2011 at Mas Balande within the Méga Castillet complex.
Challenges Faced by the Restaurant Amid Changing Times
The decision to close the original site came after much deliberation, particularly from Mimoun El Kokouchi, the co-manager of the restaurant alongside his sister, Noura. The decline in nearby businesses and changing dining habits have made it increasingly difficult to attract customers to the Boulevard Kennedy location, especially during lunch hours when people prefer dining closer to their workplaces. With the recent departure of key businesses like BNP Paribas, the viability of maintaining both locations became questionable. "It was a difficult decision to make, but ultimately, we had to focus on ensuring the sustainability of the restaurant," said Mimoun. Despite the inevitable nostalgia associated with closing their first establishment, the family made a collective decision for the future stability of their business.
The Casablanca restaurant's legacy will undoubtedly continue in its new location, where it has already established a solid customer base. Mimoun acknowledges the difficulties faced by local businesses, including issues with parking on Boulevard Kennedy, which further complicates attracting diners. The family is determined to adapt to the changing landscape of the restaurant industry and continue providing top-notch Moroccan cuisine to its patrons.
