On April 14, Morocco proudly unveiled the Mohammed VI Tower, a remarkable skyscraper that stands at an impressive height of 250 meters and comprises 55 floors. This architectural marvel, designed by renowned Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz in collaboration with Hakim Benjelloun, serves as a beacon of modernity and significantly alters the urban skyline of Rabat and Salé along the northern banks of the Bouregreg River.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, under the directive of King Mohammed VI. This monumental project is part of the broader initiative aimed at developing the Bouregreg Valley, which is encapsulated in the 'Rabat City of Lights' framework, establishing Rabat as the cultural capital of Morocco, as reported by the official MAP agency.
This ambitious plan seeks to transform the city into a vibrant cultural hub through heritage rehabilitation, the creation of modern spaces, and the hosting of artistic events, all while adhering to a sustainable approach that harmonizes tradition with contemporary advancements.
The Mohammed VI Tower features 55 stories atop a four-level podium and boasts a constructed area exceeding 100,000 square meters. With 36 elevators, the tower houses a luxury Waldorf Astoria hotel, office spaces, residential units, a heritage observatory offering panoramic views of Rabat and neighboring Salé, as well as conference rooms, a library, retail spaces, and dining options.
Notably, the tower is engineered with 60-meter deep foundations designed to withstand seismic activity and flooding, includes a harmonic damper to counteract winds and vibrations, and features dynamic lighting facades along with 4,000 square meters of photovoltaic panels. Additionally, it is equipped with energy recovery systems and rainwater harvesting mechanisms.
This remarkable building has achieved prestigious international certifications, including LEED Gold from the United States and HQE from France, both of which affirm its high standards of sustainability and environmental efficiency, positioning it among the most innovative and eco-friendly structures in Africa.
Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan toured various areas of this new landmark, including the main lobby adorned with Moroccan craftsmanship, a pilot apartment, and the observatory, which offers breathtaking views of the twin cities' historical heritage, showcasing their ancient walls, kasbahs, and gates.
Rafael de La-Hoz, born in Córdoba in 1955, is one of Spain's most internationally acclaimed architects.
